Union Insurance

If you are a member of a labor union, chances are you will be able to get some kind of union insurance protection that will cover various kinds of workplace losses you could suffer.  While insurance from unions is typically not comprehensive enough to cover all of the major possibilities, it does do a good job of plugging gaps that otherwise might lead to great and unexpected financial burdens for you.

For example, if your union coverage protects you from physical injury, it might only cover up to a conservative limit, such as $50,000, whereas a full-blown insurance policy from a health or worker’s compensation insurance company could extend that limit up to $1 million or more.

Here are some of the key coverage plan options you should expect from an effective labor union:

  • Personal injury insurance – Includes physical or mental injuries suffered at work.
  • Advertising injury – False or misleading advertising coverage.
  • Car rental reimbursement – If you need to travel because of your job, the union may be able to foot the bill for your car travel.
  • Towing and labor on employee cars – Similarly, the labor union may offer coverage for damages incurred while on the job in a company car.
  • Business operation interruption coverage – Natural disasters, strikes or other events can halt businesses for a time.  Get this coverage if you are worried that this might happen where you work.
  • Professional liability coverage – We have an entire website devoted to this type of insurance!
  • Umbrella (high-level) coverage – This will raise the policy limits into the millions of dollars if needed.

Check with your worker’s union to see if they will insure you against these and other kinds of losses.  You might be entitled to certain insurance plan benefits from the union without knowing it!
