Dental Insurance

Most everyone, at one time or another has had to visit the dentist. Maybe you have been blessed enough to have had excellent teeth and no history of any need for extensive dental work. Lucky you! On the other hand there are no guarantees in life and good teeth now might be bad teeth later. For the rest of us, we know how expensive a visit to the dentist can be, especially if you have no dental insurance.

We all know the value of good medical insurance and recognize the need to have it in place to cover illnesses and accidents that occur over the course of our lives. Sadly, people don’t always think about insurance for dental needs in quite the same way. They either are too busy to have regular check ups and early preventive treatments, forget about regular visits to the dentist or they just can’t afford it.

Many employers offer life, health, dental and insurance coverage options ranging from vision to disability but others don’t. If you work for a small company they might only be able to offer the most basic of health care insurance plans that don’t include the extras, such as dental coverage. You can still find dental plans through other means and it is important that you do so. The best way to keep your teeth healthy and in great shape is through regular and preventive measures. This can cost a lot of money and so finding dental benefits before problems with your teeth arise is very important.

Every dental plan is different and covers a wide range of services and coverage options. Some of these options might include preventive care, emergency care, and special procedures such as crowns, root canals, periodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery and others. Dental plans will either pay a fixed amount for a particular procedure or a percentage of the cost of a procedure. Most dental plans allow for preventive, diagnostic and other basic types of service without a deductible having to be met first. All other procedures will have some sort of deductible and will also have an annual, or lifetime, maximum benefit.

When you shop for dental coverage it is important to compare rates and coverage options. Most dental diseases are preventable and so dental coverage insurance plans are designed to allow, and even encourage, the patient to receive regular and routine preventive care. This ensures that expensive dental procedures can be prevented. Another thing to consider when shopping for dental plans is whether your current dentist is considered an approved provider. If the plan you are considering is an open plan where you can choose to go to any dentist you wish, you will need to check to see if the dentist you want to go to will accept that particular insurance plan.
